What Is Astrology?
Astrology is the study of how the positions of the sun, moon, and planets at a particular moment relate to patterns in human life. Vedic astrology, also called Jyotish, comes from ancient India. It is one of the oldest systems of astrology still practised today, with roots going back to the Vedas.
Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac. This means it is based on the actual, observed position of the stars in the sky. Western astrology, on the other hand, uses the tropical zodiac, which is based on the seasons rather than the stars. Because of this difference, a person’s sun sign in Vedic astrology can be different from their sun sign in Western astrology. This confuses many people when they first come across Jyotish, so it helps to know the difference from the start.
What Is a Birth Chart?
A birth chart, called a kundli or janam patrika, is like a photograph of the sky taken at the exact time and place you were born. It shows where each planet was sitting at that moment, mapped across twelve houses. Each house stands for a different part of life, such as wealth, family, career, marriage, or health.
To draw an accurate chart, an astrologer needs three things from you: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth. Even a difference of a few minutes in birth time can shift the ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, and that changes how the whole chart is read. This is why astrologers always ask for your birth time carefully, and why a chart made with a wrong or approximate time can give misleading results.
Is Astrology About Fixed Fate?
No good astrologer will tell you that your chart is a fixed script you cannot change. A birth chart is better understood as a map of tendencies and cycles, not a prediction carved in stone. It can show periods that are likely to be favourable for career growth, marriage, or travel, and periods where more caution is needed. But how you act during those periods is still up to you.
Think of it like a weather forecast. Knowing that rain is likely on a certain day does not decide what will happen. It simply helps you carry an umbrella and plan better. Astrology works in a similar way. It gives you information so you can make more informed choices, not a fixed outcome you cannot avoid.

People usually come for a reading when they are facing a big decision or feel unsure about something in life. Some common reasons are:
