How Birth Charts Work
Every Vedic birth chart is built from three parts working together: planets, houses, and signs, also called rashis. Once you understand these three, you can start to make sense of how any chart is read.
The Nine Planets (Grahas)
Vedic astrology looks at nine main bodies: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and two points called Rahu and Ketu, known as the lunar nodes. Each one stands for a different part of life.
- Sun: soul, confidence, father, authority
- Moon: mind, emotions, mother, comfort
- Mars: courage, energy, siblings, conflict
- Mercury: intellect, communication, business
- Jupiter: wisdom, growth, luck, teachers
- Venus: love, beauty, marriage, comfort in life
- Saturn: discipline, hard work, delay, long-term results
- Rahu: ambition, obsession, sudden gain, foreign connection
- Ketu: detachment, spirituality, sudden loss, past karma
A birth chart is not read planet by planet in isolation. Each planet’s effect changes depending on which house and sign it sits in, and which other planets it is connected to.
The Twelve Houses (Bhavas)
The chart is divided into twelve houses. Each house represents a different area of life:
- Self, personality, physical body
- Wealth, family, speech
- Courage, siblings, short journeys
- Home, mother, emotional foundation, property
- Children, education, creativity, romance
- Health, obstacles, debts, daily work
- Marriage, partnerships, business tie-ups
- Longevity, transformation, hidden matters, inheritance
- Luck, higher learning, father, dharma
- Career, public status, authority
- Income, gains, friendships, hopes
- Losses, expenses, foreign travel, spirituality
For example, if a chart has a strong Jupiter placed in the 10th house, it often points to a respected and growth-oriented career. If Saturn sits in the 7th house, it can mean marriage comes later in life, or that the relationship needs patience and maturity to work well.
The Twelve Signs (Rashis)
The twelve rashis are Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrischika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius), and Meena (Pisces). Each planet sits in one of these signs at the time of birth, and the sign colours how that planet’s energy comes out. Mars in a fiery sign like Mesha tends to act fast and boldly. The same Mars sitting in a watery sign like Karka often shows up as suppressed anger or emotional intensity instead.
Aspects: How Planets Influence Each Other
In Vedic astrology, planets do not just sit quietly in their own house. They also cast what is called a drishti, or aspect, on other houses, which means their influence reaches there too. As a general rule, every planet aspects the house directly opposite it (seven houses away). Some planets have extra aspects: Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th house from where it sits, Jupiter aspects the 5th and 9th, and Saturn aspects the 3rd and 10th. This is why two charts with the same planet in the same house can still read very differently, depending on what is aspecting that house from elsewhere in the chart.
Putting It Together
A proper reading looks at which planets sit in which houses and signs, how they aspect each other, and which planetary period (called a dasha) is currently active in a person’s life. It is this full combination, not any single placement looked at alone, that gives an accurate and personal reading.
