What Are Dashas? Understanding Planetary Periods
If houses and planets show what your chart means, dashas show when those themes are likely to come up. This timing system is one of the biggest strengths of Vedic astrology. It gives astrologers a structured timeline of planetary periods that runs across a person’s whole life, not just a general reading of personality.
The Vimshottari Dasha System
The most commonly used system is called Vimshottari Dasha. It divides a 120 year cycle among the nine planets. Each planet rules a period, called a mahadasha, of a fixed length:
- Ketu: 7 years
- Venus: 20 years
- Sun: 6 years
- Moon: 10 years
- Mars: 7 years
- Rahu: 18 years
- Jupiter: 16 years
- Saturn: 19 years
- Mercury: 17 years
Added together, these come to exactly 120 years, which is why the system is called Vimshottari, meaning “120” in Sanskrit. Which planet’s mahadasha a person is running at a given age is worked out from the position of the Moon at the exact time of birth. This is one more reason birth time needs to be accurate. A wrong birth time can place someone in the wrong mahadasha entirely, which throws off the whole reading.
Within each mahadasha there are smaller sub-periods, called antardashas, ruled by other planets in turn. For example, a person in their Jupiter mahadasha will pass through a Jupiter antardasha first, then a Saturn antardasha, then a Mercury antardasha, and so on, each lasting a few months to a couple of years. Someone in a Jupiter mahadasha with a Saturn antardasha running will usually feel a mix of both energies together: Jupiter’s growth and opportunity, along with Saturn’s slower, more disciplined pace.
Why Dashas Matter for Predictions
Dashas explain why two people with very similar birth charts can go through completely different years. Even if their planets sit in almost the same houses, their current dasha period may be ruled by a different planet, which brings different themes to the front. This is one of the main reasons astrologers ask for date, time, and place of birth so carefully. Even a small error in birth time can shift the dasha timeline by months or years.

- Understanding why another period suddenly brought good opportunities
- Timing major decisions, such as changing jobs, getting married, or starting a business, around more supportive periods
